PREGNANCY RATES – GENERAL POPULATION
If you’re trying to conceive it’s important to understand normal rates of conception.
Overall, humans aren’t all that fertile, especially compared to other mammals.
· The average pregnancy rate is 20% per month.
· The average time to conceive is about 6 months.
· 85% of couples conceive after 1 year.
· Some couples take longer than 1 year but still conceive without fertility treatment.
· 15% of pregnancies will end in pregnancy loss due to miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
As we age, fertility declines. This happens in men and women, but more so in women. The drop in fertility in women is mainly due to reducing egg quality, meaning that eggs are less likely to fertilize. As a woman ages, chromosomal abnormalities in embryos also become more common, contributing to lower fertility rates. Finally, as a woman ages, conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids tend to become worse, further affecting their chances of conception
